Pune: Indapur Civic Opposition Leader Injured in Daylight Attack Outside Municipal Council
Indapur, 2nd July 2026: Opposition leader in the Indapur Municipal Council, Anil Pawar, narrowly escaped a serious assault after four unidentified men allegedly attacked him with a chopper and a knife outside the civic body’s office on Thursday afternoon.
According to the police, the attack took place around 1 pm shortly after Pawar walked out of the municipal council office after attending routine official work. The assailants, who had covered their faces with masks, allegedly confronted him near the statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in front of the council building before attacking him.
Police said Pawar managed to fend off the attackers, preventing more serious injuries. He sustained an injury to his left hand during the assault. A man identified as Wasim Shaikh, who rushed to Pawar’s rescue, was also injured in the incident.
Personnel from the Indapur police station reached the spot soon after receiving information about the attack. Investigators have begun examining CCTV footage from the area to identify the assailants. The motive behind the attack is yet to be established, police said.
Both Pawar and Shaikh were admitted to the Indapur Sub-District Hospital, where they are undergoing treatment.
Indapur Municipal Council president Bharat Shah visited the hospital to enquire about Pawar’s condition. Speaking to reporters, Pawar said he had survived the attack and expressed confidence that the police would trace the assailants and take prompt action against them.
Police Inspector Vilas Nale of the Indapur police station said an investigation is underway to identify the attackers and ascertain the motive behind the assault.
