Pune: Industries Minister Urges Immediate Action To Prevent Water Pollution In Indrayani And Pavana Rivers

Pimpri Chinchwad, 22nd June 2023: Industries Minister Uday Samant has called upon the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) to swiftly prepare a detailed project report to address water pollution in the Indrayani and Pavana rivers due to sewage discharge from industrial areas of Pimpri Chinchwad, Chakan, and Hinjawadi. The Minister emphasized the importance of taking immediate control measures to prevent further degradation of these vital water bodies.

In a meeting attended by Member of Parliament Shrirang Barne, Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Commissioner Shekhar Singh, Additional Commissioner of PMRDA Deepak Singla, Chief Executive Officer of Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation Dr Bipin Sharma, and Chief Executive Officer of Zilha Parishad Ayush Prasad, Industries Minister Samant highlighted the significance of the Indrayani and Pavana River Rejuvenation Project.

Minister Samant stressed the need for collaborative efforts among concerned agencies to execute the project successfully. Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation, PMRDA, and Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation were directed to allocate funds and implement the project promptly. In case of funding shortages, the government assured that necessary financial support would be provided. To expedite the work, a dedicated committee, chaired by the municipal commissioner, should be formed immediately, comprising local public representatives and voluntary organizations.

The clean-up of the rivers from their source will benefit numerous individuals. The government expressed its support for the project, and tenders are expected to be issued by October 2023, with a projected completion timeline of two years. Additionally, 10 acres of land have been allocated in Charholi to facilitate the relocation of 92 small-scale entrepreneurs currently operating on DP road.

MP Barne emphasized the importance of addressing the concerns of the countless devotees who visit Dehu-Alandi. Efforts to address the pollution issues in the Indrayani River were encouraged to ensure the timely completion of the project.

PCMC Commissioner Shekhar Singh provided an informative presentation on the project and the preventive measures being undertaken by the municipal corporation to curb water pollution.

The meeting was attended by representatives from the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board, Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation, Hinjewadi, Maan, Talegaon, Dehu, Alandi Municipal Councils, industry associations, and voluntary organizations.
