Pune: Infant and Human Remains Found Dumped in Garbage in Daund; Police Launch Investigation
Daund, 25th March 2025: An unsettling discovery was made in Borawkenagar, Daund Taluka, Pune district, where an infant and human remains were found discarded in a garbage pile. The Daund police, after inspecting the site, have launched an investigation with the assistance of medical experts. Authorities are also probing local hospitals that may be linked to the case.
The remains were found in containers dumped in a canal drain near Jijamata Nagar, adjacent to the Daund-Kurkumbh National Highway. A waste collector stumbled upon the containers inside a cardboard box and alerted the authorities.
According to a post by the Maharashtra State Commission for Women on X (formerly Twitter), preliminary information suggests that the human remains had been stored at a hospital for study since 2020 but were mistakenly discarded as garbage. The commission has directed the police to expedite the investigation and submit a factual report at the earliest.
The police were alerted via Maharashtra’s emergency helpline (Dial 112). Following this, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Bapurao Dadas and Assistant Inspector Nagnath Patil from Daund Police Station arrived at the scene.
DSP Dadas stated that initial observations indicate one of the containers held a fully formed but deceased infant, while others contained human body parts. Authorities have yet to determine whether the infant was born prematurely or at full term.
The retrieved containers have been sent to the sub-district hospital for forensic examination, and a medical report is expected to provide further clarity. Meanwhile, a case is being registered at Daund Police Station, police officials confirmed.
The incident has raised serious concerns about illegal abortions and the reckless disposal of biomedical waste by certain hospitals and clinics, once again bringing the issue into the public spotlight.
