Pune, 17th October 2025: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has announced the initial Development Plan (DP) for the nine villages recently included within its limits. The proposed plan outlines a roadmap for sustainable urban growth, keeping in view the projected rise in population and increasing urbanization.

According to the plan, the combined population of these nine villages — currently around 6 lakh — is expected to reach 8.1 lakh by 2035. To accommodate this growth, 42 percent of the total area has been earmarked for residential use, while special emphasis has been placed on creating public amenities and strengthening infrastructure.

The development area spans approximately 5,500 hectares, of which 374 hectares (around 8%) are reserved for various civic and social amenities. About 15 percent of the land will be dedicated to roads and communication networks. The plan includes the construction of main roads measuring 45, 36, 30, 24, and 18 meters in width to ensure better connectivity and traffic flow.

The proposed DP also focuses on essential infrastructure:
41 hectares reserved for educational institutions such as primary and secondary schools.
18 hectares earmarked for medical facilities, including hospitals and urban health centres.
74 hectares allocated for playgrounds and sports complexes.
88.12 hectares designated for gardens and public parks.

One of the unique features of the plan is the inclusion of ‘sponge gardens’ near water reservoirs. These green spaces are designed to aid natural flood control and groundwater recharge, promoting environmental sustainability.

Assistant Director of the Urban Planning Department Abhijit Ketkar has been appointed as the government-designated officer for overseeing the implementation of the plan.

Officials said the DP was prepared after taking into account existing infrastructure, roads, and ongoing construction, along with government directives and planning standards to ensure balanced urban development.

Plan Highlights:
Total area: 5,500 hectares
Reserved area: 374 hectares (8%)
Residential area: 42%
Roads: 15% of total area
Sponge gardens: For flood control and groundwater recharge
Total reservations: 175

The PMC administration said the plan aims to balance growth with livability by integrating environmental, infrastructural, and social needs of the rapidly expanding city.
