Pune: Inmates From Yerawada Jail Win First Prize In Chess Competition, To Represent India In World Competition

Pune 28th Sept 2023: The inmates from Yerawada Central Jail have secured their place for the world chess competition by becoming one of the three teams of inmates selected to represent India. The inmates from Yerawada Jail have secured first prize in ‘Parivartan-Prison To Prison To Pride Com’ chess competition organised by the Indian Oil Corporation Limited.

The inter-prison competition is organised every year and this time it was held between September 26 and 27. A total of 19 teams from various prisons of different states of the country participated in the competition and six rounds were held on September 26. The team of inmates from Yerawada won all six matches and secured first prize in the competition. Yerawada Jail’s team defeated Varanasi, Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Prayagraj, Dimapur-Nagaland and Baroda prison’s teams. Four teams were selected to the final rounds held on September 27.

The inmates from Yerwada defeated Bhuvaneshwar and Bangalore jail teams to secure the first position. Three teams from India including Yerawada Central Jail, Bhubaneswar and Bangalore will represent India in the International competition for prisoners scheduled in October this year, said officials. The team from Yerawada Jail represented India in the competition last as well and had secured a Bronze medal for the country.
