Pune: Investigation into Sahyadri Hospital Liver Transplant Deaths Enters Final Stage
Pune, 25th September 2025: A high-level committee is set to conduct an on-site investigation into the deaths of a husband and wife following a liver transplant at Sahyadri Hospital in the Deccan area. The committee will visit the hospital on September 25 to examine the treatment and surgical procedures administered, aiming to submit its report to the government by the end of the month.
Bapu Komkar passed away on August 15 after undergoing a liver transplant, while his wife Kamini Komkar, who had been the organ donor, died on August 22. Relatives of the couple have alleged medical negligence on the part of Sahyadri Hospital, prompting the formation of the high-level inquiry.
Transplant surgeries at Sahyadri Hospital have been temporarily suspended pending the investigation. The Public Health Department, along with the Pune Municipal Corporation’s Health Department, had issued a formal notice to the hospital following the incident.
The committee is headed by Dr. Mohammed Rela, President of the International Liver Transplant Society, Chennai, with Dr. Bhagwan Pawar, Deputy Director of Health Services, serving as member secretary. Other members include Dr. Ram Prabhu, Dr. Rahul Pandit, Dr. Vasant Nagvekar, Dr. Vijay Vora, Dr. Akash Shukla, and Dr. Padmasen Ranbagle. The committee had earlier held a video-conference meeting on August 29 to review medical reports submitted by the hospital and to outline the scope of the inquiry.
“All reports related to the treatment and surgery of the patients have been obtained from Sahyadri Hospital. The committee will visit the hospital for a detailed on-site inquiry. We expect to complete the investigation by the end of this month and submit the report to the government,” said Dr. Bhagwan Pawar, Deputy Director, Health Services.
The upcoming on-site inspection marks the final stage of the inquiry, which seeks to determine the circumstances surrounding the tragic deaths and ensure accountability.
