Pune: Iranian Flags, Khamenei Posters Spark Controversy in Loni Kalbhor; Police Probe Underway
Loni Kalbhor, 30th June 2025: Residents of the Loni Station area on the Pune-Solapur National Highway were taken aback on Sunday after Iranian national flags and posters of Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei appeared across their locality. A video showing the banners quickly went viral on social media, prompting immediate intervention by local authorities.
By Monday, the Loni Kalbhor police had removed the flags and posters, though questions remain over who installed them and why. The incident has left residents puzzled, with suspicions ranging from political messaging to religious motivations.
The event has reignited discussions around Khamenei’s Indian ancestry. His great-grandfather, Sayyid Ahmad Musavi, hailed from Kintoor village in Uttar Pradesh before migrating to Iran in 1830. This link has contributed to cultural and religious affinity toward Iran among segments of India’s Shia Muslim community, particularly in Jammu and Kashmir. There is a sizeable population in the Loni Kalbhor area also.
Experts noted that the sudden display of Iranian symbols in Pune comes close on the heels of the recent ceasefire between Iran and Israel, following a period of heightened regional tensions. Some believe the banners could reflect religious sentiment, though the motive remains unclear.
The police are actively investigating and have begun scanning CCTV footage to identify those responsible. Officials stressed that the situation is under control and appealed for calm and communal harmony.
While police acted swiftly to prevent unrest, some locals expressed concern over how the posters were installed at such heights without anyone noticing, raising fears of a possible attempt to provoke communal tension.
