Wakad, 11th April 2023: A 51-year-old IT engineer from Wakad lost a staggering Rs 12.85 lakh after falling victim to an online scam.

The complainant, who works remotely for a Bangalore-based IT company, was approached by an unknown individual who offered him the chance to work from home and earn extra money by posting favorable reviews on Google. Intrigued, he clicked on the fraudulent message and was promised Rs 150 for each positive rating.

Shortly after, he received a call from a supposed company representative who informed him that he needed to pay a certain amount for each task to participate in a paid task that would earn him additional money. The con artist guaranteed that the money would be returned together with his earnings after he completed the job. He fell for the scheme and transferred Rs 12.85 lakh in five separate transactions to the fraudster’s bank account.

When he discovered that the assignment and the task providers were both bogus, he contacted them, but they refused to return his money. He lodged a complaint on Sunday at the Wakad police station, and the case has been taken up by the cybercrime cell, which is conducting an investigation to identify the perpetrators.

The cybercrime cell has registered a case at Wakad police station under Sections 406, 419, 420, and 34 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and other relevant sections of the Information Technology Act.
