New Delhi/Pune, 20th March 2026: Several major airports across India are set to undergo phased closures in the coming months due to planned runway upgrades, a move expected to disrupt commercial flight operations and prompt airlines to revise schedules.

Officials said the maintenance drive will cover airports in Jodhpur, Srinagar, Pune, and Adampur Air Base, all of which operate under dual-use arrangements with the Indian Air Force. The upgrades are aimed at ensuring that runways meet the stringent operational standards required for both civilian and military aircraft.

The most immediate impact will be seen in Jodhpur, where civil flight operations will remain suspended from March 29 to April 27. Airlines have already begun halting bookings for this period, indicating the scale of the disruption. A NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) has also been issued to formally notify operators about the temporary closure. The long-pending runway upgrade work at the airport is expected to be completed by May.

Airlines, including IndiGo, Air India, and Air India Express, have suspended ticket sales for Jodhpur routes beyond March 28 in line with the shutdown schedule.

In Srinagar, the disruption will be staggered later this year. The airport is expected to remain closed on weekends between August and mid-October, followed by a complete shutdown from October 16 to November 5, affecting travel plans during the peak season.

Meanwhile, Pune airport is also slated for runway renovation, though exact dates are yet to be officially announced. Passengers travelling to and from the city may face schedule changes and possible cancellations once the timeline is finalised.

In Punjab, Adampur Air Base could witness one of the longest closures, with reports suggesting a shutdown of up to eight months, likely to begin later this year. Such an extended disruption may significantly impact regional air connectivity.

Officials noted that periodic runway maintenance is critical at dual-use airports, where infrastructure must support high-performance military aircraft alongside commercial operations. Regular upgrades and resurfacing are essential to maintain safety, efficiency, and operational readiness, particularly at strategically important locations.
