Pune: Joyville Housing Project Fined Rs 10 Lakh for Discharging Sewage into Natural Stream in Manjri
Hadapsar, 28th October 2025: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has imposed a fine of ₹10 lakh on Shapoorji Pallonji’s Joyville housing project located in Manjri–Shewalewadi for allegedly releasing untreated sewage into a natural stream.
Assistant Municipal Commissioner Balasaheb Dhawale-Patil issued the notice to the company after the violation came to light. Additionally, the PMC has levied a fine of ₹15,000 for dumping construction debris in the surrounding area.
Ten days ago, Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram conducted an inspection tour of the Shewalewadi–Manjri area to review local civic issues. During the visit, he observed that a large volume of sewage was being discharged into a nearby natural stream. Taking immediate cognizance, he directed officials to initiate strict action.
Following his instructions, Assistant Commissioner Dhawale-Patil imposed a penalty of ₹10 lakh on the developer. The inspection report also noted that the sewage discharge had created a risk of vector-borne diseases such as chikungunya, dengue, and malaria, as well as severe foul odour in the area. The company has been ordered to immediately stop the sewage flow and pay the penalty.
Local residents have expressed concern over the long-standing environmental and public health issues caused by the project.
“Construction work at the Joyville project has been ongoing for the past four to five years, round the clock. Around 2,000 migrant workers are employed there, many of whom allegedly engage in substance abuse and roam around nearby villages, causing nuisance. Apart from sewage discharge, debris is also frequently dumped in other areas, and large-scale tree cutting has taken place. I have repeatedly lodged complaints with the municipal and police commissioners, but little action was taken. It is only after the municipal commissioner’s direct intervention that this strong penalty has been imposed,” said Rahul Shewale, District Vice President of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
