Pune, January 11, 2021: The Jumbo COVID centre at College of Engineering Pune (COEP) ground in Shivajinagar will shut down temporarily from 15th January, as there is a sharp drop in Covid-19 cases in the city. The whole set-up will be kept as it is, and can be restarted within seven days if required, said Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) officials.

The facility has a capacity of 800 beds but is barely housing 95 patients at the moment. The cost to run this facility is about Rs 4 crore per month. The administration decided to shut down this facility temporarily and turn these expenses to develop other important health facilities.

As per PMC health department officials, new admissions are already stopped at the jumbo centre and in the coming days, patients currently undergoing treatment there will be discharged. In the case of a surge in future, the facility at Baner can be used.
