Pune, 19 June 2025: In response to rising water levels due to persistent rainfall, the Water Resources Department of Maharashtra began releasing 2,000 cusecs of water from the Khadakwasla Dam into the Mutha River at 1:00 PM today. The decision has prompted flood alerts across low-lying areas of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).

“All Municipal Assistant Commissioners have been instructed to inform the citizens about safety. Teams are taking action about waterlogging in various areas”, said PMC Additional Commissioner Prithviraj BP.

According to an official notice issued by Shweta Kurhade, Control Officer at the Central Flood Control Room, Khadakwasla Irrigation Division, the water discharge is being carried out as a precautionary measure amid ongoing rainfall in the dam’s catchment areas.

“Due to the continuous inflow into Khadakwasla Dam, a controlled release of 2,000 cusecs has commenced. Citizens, especially those living near the riverbed, should remain alert and avoid venturing close to the river,” Kurhade stated.

Residents have been urged to remove any materials or livestock from the riverbed immediately. The alert has been issued with a special focus on safety in riverside areas such as Sinhagad Road, Mhatre Bridge, Deccan, Shivane, and Erandwane, where flooding is typically observed during dam releases.
