Pune, November 11, 2020: Fearing the rise in pollution levels, which could further aggravate the situation of the Coronavirus infected patients, kids and Team Swacch Kalyani Nagar has alleged that Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has authorised firecracker stall at the ground on central avenue, Kalyani Nagar.
Many housing societies in the Kalyani Nagar area have been campaigning for a safe and cracker-free Diwali. One such society is Landmark Garden, where residents marched around the premises with the slogan “Say no to crackers” this year. This march saw kids take the lead and push the initiative passionately.
Speaking to Punekarnews.in, PMC Corporator Yogesh Mulik said, “We don’t know when they have set this stall up. However, citizens have boycotted buying from them and I stand with them.”
A local resident Purnima Joshi said, “The only way forward to safeguard our health was to boycott the purchase of crackers.”
Another resident Jayalalitha of Landmark Garden added, “We began this campaign with the help of kids in our society! What makes this great is that they are going to be the future generation who are going to protect the earth and it’s great to see so much concern amongst them as well.”
“Many cities and states like West Bengal, Chandigarh, Karnataka, etc., have already banned crackers this year in the interest of curtailing the illnesses caused by it. Pune is one of the major affected cities, should have taken this step too, but it hasn’t. So it is the responsibility of the people to take this matter into their hands”, said another resident.
Punekarnews.in spoke to Nilesh Agarwal, the owner of Agarwal fireworks. “We are businessmen, and we have been issued the tender for selling. PMC hasn’t banned the firecrackers, but I also understand the concern of citizens”, he said.
