Pune: Koregaon Bhima Commission Issues Show Cause Notice to Uddhav Thackeray Over Prakash Ambedkar’s Plea
Pune, 31st October 2025: The Koregaon Bhima Inquiry Commission, investigating the violence that erupted near Pune on January 1, 2018, has issued a show cause notice to former Maharashtra Chief Minister and Shiv Sena (UBT) president Uddhav Thackeray. The notice pertains to his alleged failure to respond to an application filed by Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) leader Prakash Ambedkar.
According to the commission’s counsel, Ashish Satpute, Thackeray has been asked to appear before the commission on December 2 at 11 a.m., either personally or through an authorised representative. “The panel has directed Thackeray to explain why Ambedkar’s application should not be accepted. The commission has also stated that legal action may be taken if he fails to comply with the notice,” Satpute said.
The dispute stems from an application submitted by Ambedkar, through his lawyer Kiran Kadam, requesting the production of specific documents reportedly handed over in 2020 by NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) chief Sharad Pawar to Thackeray, who was then the Chief Minister.
The commission had earlier sent notices to Thackeray on September 12 and October 27, but no response was received. Following the lack of communication, Ambedkar’s counsel filed another plea seeking the issuance of a bailable warrant to ensure Thackeray’s presence before the panel.
The Koregaon Bhima Inquiry Commission is chaired by former Bombay High Court Chief Justice J. N. Patel, with former Maharashtra Chief Secretary Sumit Mullick serving as a member.
The commission continues to examine various aspects surrounding the 2018 violence, including administrative response, political accountability, and evidence presented by multiple stakeholders.
