Pune: Lost College Youths Rescued in Lonavala’s Dhak Bahiri Area Amid Harsh Weather
Lonavala, 28th June 2023: Four college students from Pune found themselves lost in the remote Dhak Bahiri area of the Sahyadri hills near Rajmachi Fort on Tuesday evening due to heavy rain and dense fog. The timely intervention of the Shivdurg Mitra and Maval Wildlife Protection Team in Lonavala ensured their safe rescue.
Chetan Kabade, Sumit Shende, Amol More, and Aditya Sangle, who are enrolled in a college in Pune, embarked on a trek to the Bahiri hill range of Dhak via Kondeshwar on Tuesday (June 27). Unfortunate weather conditions, with rainfall and thick fog in the Lonavala area, caused Chetan, Sumit, Amol, and Aditya to lose their way amidst the dense fog and bushes. As darkness fell, they managed to reach out for help using their mobile phones.
Upon receiving the distress call, the members of Shivdurg Mitra, Apada Mitra Maval, Maval Wildlife Protection Team, as well as the Kamshet Police and Kondeshwar authorities, were immediately alerted about the college students’ predicament in the remote hills. Despite the challenging conditions of heavy rainfall, darkness, and fog, a search operation was promptly initiated in the Dhak Bahiri area. Eventually, the four youths were discovered near Kusur Plateau late at night.
Sunil Gaikwad, Mahesh Mhasane, Yogesh Umbre, Ratan Singh, Harsh Tonde, Nilesh Sampatrao Garade from Shivdurg Mitra, along with Ganesh Nisal and Ganesh Dhore from Maval Wildlife Protection Team, played instrumental roles in the search and rescue mission. The operation was not without difficulties, given the adverse weather conditions.
Finally, the college students were located and safely handed over to the Kamshet Police around 1 am. The combined efforts of the search team and local villagers ensured a successful and timely rescue operation, despite the challenging circumstances.
