Pune, 25th July 2025: The issue of poor food quality and hygiene in hostels at Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) has once again come under the spotlight. Students have alleged that maggots were found in the food served at the university canteen on July 22, sparking outrage and criticism against the university administration after videos of the incident went viral on social media.

According to students, this is not an isolated incident. They claim that unsanitary food practices have been recurring for a long time, and despite repeated complaints, the university authorities have failed to take effective action. In recent weeks, students had also reported a sharp increase in rats and bedbugs in the hostel premises, further adding to their frustration.

The viral video has intensified the call for accountability. Students expressed serious concerns over the unhygienic conditions of hostel kitchens, the lack of proper cleanliness, and the administration’s apparent apathy towards student health and safety.

“This is not the first time such contamination has happened. The administration has ignored our concerns repeatedly,” one student said.

Students Demand Action:
The student community has urged the university to initiate a thorough investigation into the incident and punish those responsible. They have also demanded that strict action be taken against any party endangering the health and well-being of students.
