Pune: Maha Vikas Aghadi Finalises Seat-Sharing Formula for Pune Civic Polls; Equal Seats for Three Core Parties
Pune, 27th December 2025: Amid speculation over a possible reunification of the two factions of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), political clarity appears to be emerging ahead of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) elections, with the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) finalising a seat-sharing formula for the civic body.
Sources within the alliance indicate that the three constituent parties of the MVA, the Congress, NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar faction), and Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray faction), have agreed to contest the PMC polls on an equal seat-sharing basis, with 50 seats each, while the remaining seats will be allotted to like-minded smaller parties.
The renewed discussions within the MVA gained momentum after talks regarding a possible alliance between the two NCP factions failed to materialise. This development shifted focus back to strengthening the opposition alliance for the upcoming civic elections in Pune.
Confirming the developments, Pune Congress city president Arvind Shinde said that discussions under the Maha Vikas Aghadi banner had been underway for several days. He acknowledged that there were deliberations on whether to include Ajit Pawar-led NCP in the alliance; however, Congress senior leaders advised against partnering with any party currently aligned with the BJP.
“Based on the guidance of our senior leadership, we clearly conveyed to the NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) leadership that an alliance should not be formed with parties in power alongside the BJP,” Shinde said.
He added that fresh discussions were held within the MVA on Tuesday, during which ward-wise deliberations were carried out to chalk out the electoral strategy. Shinde further clarified that the MVA would contest the PMC elections only as a three-party alliance, without including the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS).
“We will contest the election as the Maha Vikas Aghadi with equal seat-sharing among the three parties, while also accommodating like-minded parties,” Shinde stated.
The final seat distribution is expected to be formally announced once the election schedule is declared.
