Pune: No Final Fire NOC For 27 Highrises, PMC Checks Safety Compliance
Pune, 24th October 2026: At least 27 highrise buildings within Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) limits are operating without the mandatory final no-objection certificate (NOC), prompting the civic fire brigade to examine whether they have adequate water for firefighting systems amid the ongoing shortage.
The fire brigade is checking the availability of water for fire hydrants and sprinklers, along with compliance with other mandatory safety requirements, before granting final clearances.
“These buildings have only provisional permission, not the final NOC. We will verify whether all requirements, including documentation and firefighting facilities, particularly water availability, have been fulfilled,” said Ganesh Sonune, head of the PMC fire brigade.
The civic administration has introduced an online software system to expedite the clearance process. However, only 22 properties have secured final clearance over the past decade.
The issue has also raised concerns over housing societies diverting water earmarked for firefighting to other uses, particularly during periods of water scarcity. Such practices could leave buildings without adequate reserves during emergencies.
“Diversion of water reserved for firefighting becomes more common during shortages. PMC must ensure that dedicated water storage is maintained for fire hydrants and sprinklers,” said Pradeep Kulkarni, a Kothrud resident.
