Pune: Maharashtra Government To Permanently Close All RTO Check Posts Following GST Implementation

Pune, 13th May 2025: In line with the Central Government’s directives and the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) system, the Maharashtra government has decided to permanently shut down all RTO check posts across the state. State Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik confirmed that this decision was made with the intention of streamlining interstate transport and removing obstacles to the movement of commercial vehicles.
A committee, chaired by the transport commissioner, conducted a detailed study to assess the potential impact and scope of this decision. Sarnaik stated that the move would lead to increased efficiency in transport operations, reduced delays, and help curb malpractices. He further explained that the border check posts, established in 1966, were initially set up to control vehicle movement, ensure adherence to transport rules, and collect road taxes. However, with the introduction of GST and advancements in digital enforcement, these physical checkpoints have become redundant.
The Minister of Road Transport and Highways of India, Nitin Gadkari, had previously instructed all state Transport Departments to close these posts. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also hinted at the closure of these check posts during the foundation stone laying ceremony of the main transport commissioner’s office. Following this, the State Transport Union had submitted a statement, and after addressing administrative issues, a positive report was sent to the Chief Minister. Once approved, the check posts on the state’s borders will be permanently closed.
