Pune, 20th October 2025: The Registration and Stamp Duty Department has announced a major initiative to digitize more than 30 crore old documents from 1865 to 2001, making them accessible to citizens through online digital signatures. The project is expected to cost around Rs 62 crore, and the tender process is set to begin soon.

Historically, documents registered between 1865 and 2001 were maintained in the traditional format, while records from 1927 to 2001 were preserved on photo films. With 517 secondary registrar offices across the state, maintaining these decades-old records has become increasingly challenging.

Deputy Inspector General of Registration Abhaysinh Mohite highlighted the urgency of the project, noting that many document pages have become moldy, and the films have deteriorated over time. “To conserve these records, the department will chemically process the rolls of documents and the films. The films will also be preserved for the long term,” he said.

The government approved the proposal, which also received the nod from the High Power Committee, and the tender process is now underway. The department aims to complete the digitization work within a year.

Once finalized, citizens will be able to access old documents online with digital signatures. These digitized records will serve as valid legal evidence in courts and can also be used for official government purposes.
