Pune: Maharashtra’s Chief Electoral Officer Joins Pride March to Promote Transgender Voter Registration

Pune, 3rd June 2023: In a groundbreaking move, the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) and District Election Officer of Maharashtra have announced their participation in the upcoming LGBTQIA+ pride parade organized by Yutak on June 4.

 

The main objective behind their participation is to actively engage with the transgender community and encourage them to register as voters. This progressive initiative aims to empower the transgender community by ensuring their voices are heard and their rights are protected.

 

The pride march will commence at Sambhajiraje Udyan and proceed towards Deccan Bus Station, Good Luck Chowk, Fergusson College Gate, Shirole Road, and eventually return to Sambhajiraje Udyan between 4 to 5 pm on June 4. It promises to be a vibrant display of solidarity and inclusivity, advocating for equal rights and acceptance for the LGBTQIA+ community.

 

Joining the CEO, Shrikant Deshpande, and the District Election Officer, Bhau Galande, will be Anil Ukarande, the founder of ‘Yutak,’ a renowned LGBTQIA+ organization. Additionally, several members from the LGBTQIA+ community are expected to participate in this momentous pride walk.

 

To further support this inclusive endeavor, a voter registration camp has been set up specifically for the transgender community at Mangalya Office, Dagdusheth, Datta Mandir. The camp will be operational from June 2 to June 3, facilitating the registration process for interested individuals.

 

Expressing his enthusiasm for the event, Shrikant Deshpande, Maharashtra’s Chief Electoral Officer, has extended a heartfelt appeal to the public, urging them to come forward and actively participate in this historic parade. The CEO’s involvement signifies a significant step towards ensuring equal representation and inclusivity in the electoral process, reaffirming the commitment of the Election Commission towards upholding democratic principles.
