Pune, 21st May 2026: A 20-year-old man was arrested from Karnataka for allegedly attacking his former girlfriend and her male friend with an acid-like chemical substance in Pune after she refused to continue a relationship with him, police said on Thursday.

According to police, the accused allegedly threatened the woman saying, “If you cannot be mine, I will not let you belong to anyone else,” before carrying out the attack in the early hours of May 20 near Tadiwala Road in the city.

Police identified the accused as Shriram Madhu Sarunvar (20). The 21-year-old victim and her friend, both employees at a hotel in Pune, were returning to their residence after work around 2 am when the accused allegedly intercepted them.

Officials said the accused confronted the woman and, before they could react, poured a highly corrosive chemical substance from a plastic container on her neck, back and both legs, causing severe burn injuries. He also allegedly threw the substance on her friend, injuring his leg.

After the attack, the accused fled from the spot under the cover of darkness.

Police said the accused was upset after the woman rejected him and started living in a live-in relationship with another man. Preliminary investigation suggests he had procured and stored the chemical substance in advance and had planned the attack.

Based on the woman’s complaint, Bundgarden police registered a case and launched an investigation. A team from the Pune Crime Branch later traced and arrested the accused from Karnataka. Both victims are undergoing treatment and are stated to be in stable condition, police said.
