Pune: Maval Taluka Exports 2 Crore Roses for Valentine’s Day Amid High Demand
Maval, 13th February 2025: Maval taluka in Pune district has seen a significant boost in its rose exports, with approximately 2 Crore flowers shipped to international markets for Valentine’s Day this year. The local market has also received 80 lakh roses, with growers enjoying favourable prices for their produce.
The taluka boasts about 500 to 600 acres of floriculture, with farmers practising enclosed flower cultivation due to abundant water availability. This method yields higher production at lower costs. The Central Government offers loan concessions for enclosed floriculture, further supporting the industry.
International markets such as Japan, Netherlands, Thailand, United States of America, France, Germany, United Kingdom, Dubai, and Ethiopia have shown high demand for Maval’s roses. Domestically, cities like Pune, Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Jaipur, Lucknow, Jabalpur, Patna, Kolkata, Bhopal, Indore, Surat, Hyderabad, and Goa are major consumers.
The most sought-after varieties for Valentine’s Day include Red Naomi, Black Baccara, Explorer, Freedom, and First Red, known for their deep red hues and long vase life. Other popular choices are Yellow Gold Strike, Pink Revival, Sweet Unique, Orange Unique, High & Magic, and White Avalanche, valued for their quality and longevity.
Pricing is determined by stem length, with 40 to 60-cm stems being the most popular in both local and global markets. This year, international markets are paying Rs 15 to Rs 16 per flower, while local markets offer Rs 17 to Rs 18.
Somnath Thakar, a trader at Pimpri Market, reports selling roses for Rs 250-300 per bunch, with customers showing strong interest. Mukund Thakar, founder of the Pavana Flower Growers Association, notes that the absence of cold weather this year has led to increased exports, with Maval taluka selling around 2 crore flowers.
