Reported by Mubarak Ansari
Narhe, 4th May 2025: All four accused in the fatal Mercedes crash that killed a 23-year-old biker near Wadgaon Bridge have been remanded to police custody till May 8, a Pune court ruled today.
The update was confirmed by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 3) Sambhaji Kadam, who said that further investigation into the high-profile case is underway.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday when a speeding Mercedes-Benz (MH 01 BK 4625), allegedly driven by an intoxicated youth, rammed into a Splendor motorcycle (MH 12 VH 4340) on the Pune-Bangalore Highway near Vishal Hotel, Wadgaon Bridge. The crash claimed the life of the rider, Kunal Manoj Hushar (23), a resident of Chinchwad, and seriously injured pillion rider Prajyot Deepak Pujari (21), also from Chinchwad.
Drunk Driving Confirmed
DCP Kadam confirmed that the driver, Shubham Rajendra Bhosale (26), a postgraduate student at DY Patil College in Pimpri Chinchwad, was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. “The vehicle was returning from a party in Hinjawadi and heading towards Khed Shivapur. Medical tests have confirmed alcohol in the driver’s system. Samples from the other three occupants are still being tested,” Kadam said.
The other occupants in the Mercedes were identified as:
- Nikhil Milind Ranawade (26) – Resident of Aundh
- Shreyas Ramkrishna Solankhi (25) – Resident of Chinchwad
- Vedant Indra Singh Rajput (28) – Resident of Nigdi
Following the collision, the Mercedes broke through the barricades of Wadgaon Bridge and plunged onto the service road below. Fortunately, airbags deployed on impact, helping the four escape without critical injuries.
Booked Under BNS Culpable Homicide Section
The Sinhagad Road Police have booked all four persons under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which pertains to culpable homicide not amounting to murder. Two of the accused were initially taken into custody, while the others were under medical observation.
The deceased’s family had earlier raised concerns over delays in medical testing and action by the police. Responding to this, DCP Kadam said, “Medical procedures were initiated promptly. We are conducting a thorough investigation using scientific methods, including retrieving data from the Event Data Recorder (EDR) and examining the vehicle’s Anti-lock Braking System (ABS).”
It has also come to light that the luxury vehicle is registered in the name of the accused driver’s mother. Investigators have established that all four had left Hinjawadi between 2 and 2:30 AM after partying, with the fatal accident occurring an hour later.
The police are now focused on gathering forensic and digital evidence to strengthen the case.
