Pune Metro Commuters Ask for 5-Minute Services
Pune, 21st August 2025: Continuous rains over the past week created major traffic congestion across the city, prompting many residents to switch to the Pune Metro for their daily commute.
The Pune Metro authorities responded by increasing train frequency to every six minutes during peak hours, while trains continue to run at 10-minute intervals during non-peak hours. Commuters, however, are urging the administration to consider running trains every five minutes or increasing coach numbers on high-demand days, especially during heavy rain or festival seasons.
Rohan Deshmukh, who traveled from Dapodi to Yerawada over the last few days, said the Metro offered a smooth and hassle-free alternative to crowded roads. “With the Dahihandi celebrations and nonstop rain, roads were chaotic, but my Metro rides were comfortable and timely,” he noted.
Regular commuter Ankit Patil suggested a more flexible approach to scheduling. “If the Metro adjusts train frequency based on demand or weather conditions, it will benefit commuters and also generate more revenue for the administration,” he said.
According to Pune Metro officials, around two lakh passengers have been traveling daily over the past couple of weeks, with numbers rising during the monsoon. On Monday, ridership across the two operational lines reached 2.11 lakh, while Tuesday saw 1.81 lakh passengers.
Sara Mehta, a resident of Kalyaninagar who commutes to Bund Garden for work, shared her experience. “I catch the 9 am train every day. Using the Metro saves me from road traffic and morning chaos. Even during the evening rush, the Metro is packed because more people are realizing its convenience,” she said.
Preksha Desai, also from Kalyaninagar, highlighted the need for increased train frequency on special occasions. “During heavy rains, Ganeshotsav, or the annual Pandharpur pilgrimage, trains need to run more often. The Metro should have a schedule that adapts to these peak times to ensure smooth travel,” she said.
Pune Metro officials confirmed that trains now operate every six minutes and are evaluating the possibility of running them every five minutes on high-demand days such as Ganeshotsav. “We are exploring options for a dynamic timetable that adjusts train frequency based on passenger demand and special events,” a spokesperson said.
