Pune Metro: Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar Metro Misses 8 Launch Dates, Code of Conduct For MLC Election Adds Further To Delay

Hinjewadi, 24th September 2026: The launch of Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority’s (PMRDA) Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar Metro corridor continues to face delays, with the project still in its final stage even after missing eight proposed launch dates over the past five months.

The latest hurdle is the absence of a date from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) for the inauguration. The model code of conduct imposed for the Legislative Council elections in the graduates’ and teachers’ constituencies has added to the uncertainty over the launch.

PMRDA metropolitan commissioner Dr Abhijit Chaudhary has been regularly inspecting the Metro works. He conducted another inspection of the corridor recently as the civic authority continues to monitor the progress of the project.

The 23-km Shivajinagar-Hinjewadi Metro corridor, Pune’s third Metro route, is being developed by PMRDA in a public-private partnership with Pune IT City Metro Rail Ltd. The project is the country’s first Metro project to be implemented under the PPP model. The corridor, comprising 23 stations, is expected to provide relief from traffic congestion between the Hinjewadi IT hub and central Pune.

PMRDA had initially planned to launch the Metro on May 1. The plan was subsequently revised, with the corridor expected to reach Shivajinagar in August and the remaining stations to be operational by the end of December. However, the work remains incomplete, resulting in eight proposed launch dates being missed in the past five months.

“The inauguration date has not been received from the Prime Minister’s Office. The model code of conduct has also come into force. We will seek guidance from the district collector’s office on whether the inauguration programme can be held and will take further action as per the directions of the election authorities,” Chaudhary said.
