Pune Metro Line 3 Gains Traction with Successful Second Trial on Hinjawadi–Shivajinagar Stretch
Pune, 23rd July 2025: Progress on Pune Metro Line 3, the much-anticipated transit corridor connecting Hinjawadi IT Park to Shivajinagar, reached another milestone as the second trial run was completed. Conducted at a higher test speed of around 40 km/h, the run signals a strong push toward the eventual commissioning of the project.
This fully elevated 23.3-kilometer metro route underwent its first trial earlier this month between Maan Depot and PMR-4 Station. With nearly 87% of construction completed, officials from the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) noted that the recent trial confirms the system’s technical soundness and readiness for a phased opening.
The new corridor is set to be a game-changer for daily commuters, especially those working in Pune’s bustling IT hubs. Designed to reduce congestion on key routes across Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, the line features 23 stations and is part of a broader vision for sustainable, modern urban mobility.
A PMRDA official stated, “This successful trial reflects our progress and commitment. Once fully operational, Line 3 will significantly reduce traffic pressure, particularly in the Hinjawadi area.”
Key Details of Metro Line 3:
Route: Hinjawadi to Shivajinagar
Length: 23.3 km (entirely elevated)
Stations: 23 total, with interchanges to other metro lines
Train Type: Three-coach, air-conditioned trains with capacity for 1,000 passengers
Top Speed: Up to 80 km/h
Target Completion: March 2026
The project, developed under a public-private partnership (PPP) model between PMRDA and Pune IT City Metro Rail Limited (PITCRL), began construction on November 25, 2024, and has been progressing steadily.

Amid persistent traffic woes in the Hinjawadi belt and rising demand from citizens and civic authorities, PMRDA is reportedly planning an early partial launch of a 13-km segment — from Megapolis Circle to Balewadi Phata — by September 2025, according to Hindustan Times. This early rollout is expected to provide much-needed relief to road users in the area.
