Pune Metro Plans Feeder Services with Auto Drivers to Ease Commutes
Pune, 4th March 2025: In a bid to provide seamless connectivity from homes to metro stations and vice versa, Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation (MahaMetro) has announced plans to collaborate with auto-rickshaw drivers to develop a “Joint Action Plan.” This initiative aims to enhance the accessibility of Pune Metro services while addressing traffic congestion in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad.
Currently, many metro stations lack adequate parking facilities, forcing commuters to rely on personal vehicles to reach the stations. To resolve this issue, MahaMetro has held discussions with auto-rickshaw unions, proposing feeder services that would allow rickshaw drivers to transport passengers from their homes directly to metro stations. This plan includes determining station locations, schedules, passenger volumes, fare structures, and necessary facilities.
MahaMetro Managing Director Shravan Hardikar emphasized that integrating rickshaw services with metro operations would benefit both commuters and drivers. It would reduce reliance on private vehicles, alleviate traffic congestion, and provide an economical transport option for passengers. Rickshaw drivers would also gain financial benefits from increased trips within shorter distances.
Baba Shinde, president of the Maharashtra State Goods and Passenger Transport Association, expressed support for the initiative, highlighting the willingness of auto unions to offer meter-based services and cooperate fully with MahaMetro’s plans. The collaboration is expected to improve commuter convenience while fostering awareness among rickshaw drivers about the importance of feeder services.
