Pune, 21st September 2025: Construction of the Swargate–Katraj underground corridor, part of Phase II of the Pune Metro expansion, is set to commence by the end of this year, Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro) officials confirmed. The work order for the 5.46 km fully underground stretch is expected to be issued next month.

The extension will connect Swargate with Katraj, passing through several densely populated residential areas and alleviating traffic congestion along Satara Road. It is designed to enhance north–south connectivity in Pune and significantly reduce travel time, cutting the current 45-minute journey to under 15 minutes.

The bidding process for the project concluded on September 20, with ITD Cementation Ltd emerging as the lowest bidder at ₹1,643.88 crore. Other competitors included J Kumar Infraprojects (₹1,738 crore), Larsen & Toubro (₹1,747 crore), Tata Projects Ltd (₹1,824 crore), Afcons Infrastructure–Sam India JV (₹1,890.81 crore), and HCC–Kalpataru JV (₹1,999 crore). Officials expect the contract to be awarded within 10 days, with construction beginning soon thereafter.

The project entails the construction of two underground tunnels using four tunnel boring machines (TBMs) and five metro stations: Market Yard, Padmavati, Katraj, Bibwewadi, and Balaji Nagar. While the original January 2025 tender included only Market Yard, Padmavati, and Katraj stations, the revised tender issued on April 11, following intervention by Guardian Minister Ajit Pawar, added Bibwewadi and Balaji Nagar stations.

Once operational, the Swargate–Katraj extension will provide faster, more reliable transport across southern Pune, strengthening the city’s metro network and supporting its growing infrastructure needs.
