Pune: MH-12 to Stay? Minister Murlidhar Mohol Says Gadkari Gives Positive Assurance
Pune, 5th August 2026: Union minister and Pune MP Murlidhar Mohol on Tuesday said he has urged Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari to retain Pune’s iconic MH-12 vehicle registration code amid speculation that it could be changed as the existing series nears exhaustion.
In a post on X, Mohol said the Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO) is currently issuing registrations under the MH-12 ZZ series, the last sequence under the existing registration format. With the series nearing completion, the process to introduce the next alternative series is underway.
Rumours that Pune’s long-standing MH-12 code could be replaced had triggered discussions among residents, Mohol said, adding that the issue was significant given the emotional connect and identity associated with the registration code.
Mohol said he met Gadkari and requested that the MH-12 code be retained under all circumstances and that the Centre allow the introduction of a new registration series under the same code instead of assigning a new one.
According to Mohol, Gadkari responded positively and assured him that necessary directions would be issued to ensure that the MH-12 registration code is retained.
If implemented, the decision would allow Pune to continue using the MH-12 code for future vehicle registrations, preserving a registration mark that has long been associated with the city.
