Pune: ‘MH 61’ Registration Series Sees Rush; Two-Wheeler ‘B’ Series Nearly Exhausted in a Week
Pune, 8th September 2026: The newly introduced ‘MH 61’ vehicle registration series has received an overwhelming response from vehicle owners, with the ‘MH 61 B’ series for two-wheelers nearing exhaustion within just a week of its launch. The Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO) has now opened the ‘MH 61 C’ series for preferred two-wheeler registration numbers.
The new ‘MH 61’ series was introduced after the numbers under the existing ‘MH 12’ series were exhausted. Although there had been demands to continue the ‘MH 12’ series for Pune, this was not technically feasible, following which the new registration code was allotted to the Pune region.
An RTO registration series has 9,999 numbers. Typically, a two-wheeler series takes around 15 days to be exhausted, while a car series can take one to two months. However, the ‘MH 61 B’ series has seen an unusually fast uptake, with more than 1,800 applications received for preferred numbers.
Multiple applications for the same preferred numbers prompted the RTO to conduct an online auction. The single-digit number ‘1’ attracted the highest bid of Rs 1.91 lakh, while numbers such as 6, 5, 555, 1234 and 1909 also received high bids.
According to RTO officials, the rush followed a brief three- to four-day closure of registration and the subsequent reopening of the series, which led to a surge in applications for two-wheelers.
The RTO has now opened the ‘MH 61 C’ series for preferred two-wheeler numbers. Applicants can apply for preferred numbers until 8 pm on Tuesday, after which an online auction will be conducted for numbers that receive multiple applications. The series will subsequently be opened for regular registrations.
The ‘MH 61 A’ series for four-wheelers has also received a strong response, with around 3,000 numbers already registered. RTO officials said the series could also be exhausted soon amid the current rush. Vehicle owners who do not specifically require preferred numbers have also shown interest in obtaining the new ‘MH 61’ registration series.
