Pune: Rare Pangolin Rescued Near Khed-Shivapur, Safely Released Into Forest Area
Khed Shivapur, 8th September 2026: A rare Indian pangolin was rescued from near a residential area in Khed-Shivapur after it was spotted at night, prompting a wildlife rescue team to reach the spot and safely relocate the protected animal.
The animal, which initially appeared to be a cat-like creature, was noticed near a house in the Khed-Shivapur area. After receiving information about it, a rescue team from the Pune District Wildlife and Snake Rescuers Association reached the location and identified it as a pangolin.
The rescue operation was carried out by the association’s working president Raghunath Wadkar and wildlife rescuers Vinayak Mohite, Santosh Patil, Sonya Kamble and Madhur Avasare.
The team subsequently informed association president Sushil Vibhute and vice-president Shankar Wadkar. Vibhute contacted Vasanta Chavan, Forest Range Officer, Nasrapur, and informed him about the rescue.
The pangolin was examined for injuries and was found to be in good health. Under the guidance of the Forest Department and forest guard Sasane, the animal was subsequently released safely in a suitable forest area.
Appeal to citizens
Pangolins are rare and protected wild animals and face threats from hunting and illegal trafficking. Wildlife officials and rescuers have urged citizens not to approach, handle or disturb such animals if they are found near residential areas.
Citizens should immediately inform the Forest Department or an authorised wildlife rescue team so that the animal can be safely rescued and returned to its natural habitat.
Development affecting wildlife habitat
Wildlife rescuers said increasing development activity in the area, including Ring Road construction, other infrastructure projects and extensive excavation, is affecting the natural habitat of wild animals.
The loss of habitat and food sources is believed to be pushing wildlife towards human settlements in search of food and safer shelter, they said.
Vasanta Chavan, Forest Range Officer: “The pangolin is a protected wild animal. Citizens should not disturb it and should immediately inform the Forest Department if they spot one. Public cooperation is essential for wildlife conservation.”
Sushil Vibhute, president of the Pune District Wildlife and Snake Rescuers Association: “A pangolin had also been spotted in this area a few years ago. Increasing development and excavation are reducing wildlife habitat. Wildlife rescuers also need adequate equipment and support to carry out rescue operations effectively.”
Association has worked in wildlife rescue for 25 years
The Pune District Wildlife and Snake Rescuers Association has been involved in wildlife rescue and conservation work for the past 25 years.
The association, however, said it has not received the expected support from government and semi-government agencies or elected representatives for its work, and stressed the need for greater assistance to strengthen wildlife rescue efforts.
