Pune, 17th October 2023: A significant revelation has come to light, as the Department of Registration & Stamps has taken a stern stance against several private companies operating mobile towers in Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, and rural areas. It has been discovered that these companies have evaded paying the required stamp duty for the towers erected on privately owned land, raising concerns over lost revenue. In response to this, the Department has initiated action by issuing notices to more than 100 tower operators, to recover the stamp duty due over the past ten years.

In the regions of Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, and the surrounding rural areas, over a thousand mobile towers operated by private companies have been identified. Investigation efforts unveiled that these companies have avoided their stamp duty obligations by constructing these towers on privately owned land. Moreover, it has been revealed that these entities entered into internal agreements with landowners to circumvent stamp duty payments. The Stamp Collector of Pune City, Santosh Hingane, has taken a grave view of these practices and is determined to rectify the situation.

The Department of Registration & Stamps has already issued notices to numerous companies that have defaulted on their stamp duty payments, with the intent of recovering the outstanding revenue. Letters have been dispatched to the management of both the Pune Municipal Corporation and the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, urging them to ensure that any future mobile tower constructions in their jurisdictions adhere to proper stamp duty regulations. The Department is also in the process of identifying additional mobile tower operators who may have avoided their financial obligations.

Stamp Collector Santosh Hingane emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, “So far, 100 tower owners have been served notices for evasion of stamp duty by the companies erecting mobile towers in the city. A notice will be sent to all mobile tower holders. Through this, the government intends to recover lost revenue. A revenue of at least ten to twenty crores will likely be collected.”
