Pune: Mohammadwadi Road Asphalted Overnight After Fatal Accident; Residents Demand Heavy Vehicle Restrictions

Mohammadwadi, 24th September 2026: A road stretch near Lavanya Hotel Chowk on the Raheja Vista route in Mohammadwadi was asphalted overnight following a fatal road accident involving a dumper, prompting residents to question why repairs were carried out only after a life was lost.
The accident occurred on Monday evening at around 7:30 pm when a dumper reportedly collided with a two-wheeler near Lavanya Hotel Chowk. The two-wheeler rider, a young student, died in the accident, while his friend sustained serious injuries and was admitted to a hospital for treatment.
Following the accident, residents gathered on the road on Tuesday morning and raised concerns over the condition of the road and the movement of heavy vehicles in the area. They demanded immediate repairs and stricter enforcement against dumpers, concrete mixers and other heavy vehicles operating on the route.
The civic administration subsequently carried out asphalting work on the affected stretch during the night.
Residents alleged that heavy vehicles continue to operate on the route despite existing restrictions and claimed that traffic rules are not being adequately enforced.
Raj Singh, founder of the Sikh Helpline Foundation, said residents have repeatedly raised concerns about heavy vehicles operating on residential roads and urged authorities to take preventive measures to avoid further accidents.
Nadim Imandar, a resident, raised concerns over the condition of roads in Mohammadwadi, saying potholes and damaged stretches create additional risks for two-wheeler riders, particularly during peak traffic hours.
Ashok Mehendale, a social activist, questioned the authorities over road safety and enforcement and stressed the need for proper traffic management and preventive safety measures rather than action only after an accident.
Residents have demanded that the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and Pune Traffic Police conduct regular inspections, enforce restrictions on heavy vehicles and take steps to improve road safety in residential areas.
While the overnight asphalting has provided temporary relief, residents are now demanding permanent road repairs and stricter monitoring of heavy vehicle movement along the Mohammadwadi–Raheja Vista route.
