Pimpri, 15th March 2023: The postmortem house at YCM Hospital of Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) will be renovated with state-of-the-art facilities. The old postmortem house has the facility to perform autopsies for four people at a time. By improving this, the new building will have the facility to conduct a postmortem of nine dead bodies at a time. The new building will also have various facilities like cold storage and gallery, library, seminar hall, and museum for students of medical courses.

If a patient dies within 24 hours of being admitted to the hospital, an autopsy is required as it takes at least 24 hours to diagnose the illness after being admitted to the hospital. If the patient dies before then, an autopsy is required to find out the cause of death.

Earlier, corporators used to give letters of recommendation in case of natural death of a person under their jurisdiction. The relatives of the deceased used to get a cremation certificate. But that method was discontinued after reforming it. Now that procedure is done in the mortuary.

It is putting a strain on the work in the postmortem house. Last year, 3,884 bodies were autopsied in this mortuary. The old building is becoming inadequate, and there are many inconveniences. Therefore, the administration is working on a new well-equipped building. The mortuary at YCM is likely to start functioning from the new building by May 2023.

The process of appointing forensic science professors, assistant professors, and other staff in the mortuary is underway. There will be separate cabins for them in the new building. Forensic experts will also be appointed. The capacity of cold storage will be increased from 20 boxes to 60 boxes. The new building will have parking facilities for ambulances and relatives’ vehicles.

The new building will house six doctors and 16 staff. Also, there is currently one forensic expert, and it has been demanded that there should be four forensic experts. There will be a museum with in-depth information on photography, weapons, and poisoning. The museum will also be open to the general public. There will be a seminar hall with a capacity of 60 students. Seminars for medical college students can be held there.

There will be a mini-operation theatre equipped with all modern facilities. In this advanced learning centre, students can perform in-camera surgery related to their subject. A library will be available with books, international magazines, and other publications related to forensic subjects. This will be of great benefit to the students studying forensics. After the start of work in the new building, a Decompose Body Room will be constructed in the old building.
