Wagholi, 28th February 2023: The Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) is planning to commission two new substations in the Wagholi area of Pune to ensure smooth and quality power supply to over 38,000 consumers in the region.

The first substation is a 220/22 KV Extra High Voltage Substation, which has been proposed for the past two years. However, its construction has been delayed due to lack of space. Meanwhile, MSEDCL is working on making the 22/11 KV Gera substation and AWHO switching station operational at the earliest. Once operational, these two substations will benefit about 20,000 and 18,000 electricity consumers, respectively.

Currently, there are a total of 73,000 electricity consumers of all categories in the Wagholi area. They are supplied with electricity from four switching stations, namely 22 KV Ivy Estate, Gangavatika, Rohan Abhilasha, and Purvarang. These stations are supplied with electricity from Maharashtra State Electricity Transmission Company’s (Mahatransco) Lonikand 400/220/22 KV Extra High Voltage Substation. However, the average length of all power lines supplying electricity is 15 to 16 km, which causes interruptions in the smooth power supply.

Additionally, the load capacity of Mahatransco’s Lonikand High Voltage Substation has increased to more than 90 percent, necessitating the need for a new high-voltage substation at Wagholi.

If the proposed Wagholi substation is constructed, it will supply as many as 12 substations and switching stations, and 19 channels of 33 and 22 KV capacity. This will not only benefit the consumers in Wagholi but also around one and a half lakh customers in Ahmednagar Road and Mulshi section. Moreover, the facility of alternative power supply will be available.

The construction of the 22/11 KV Gera substation is in progress and will be supplied with electricity from the 132/22 KV Kharadi and 22/22 KV Marvel Zephyr switching stations. It is expected to be completed in the next six months and will benefit 20,000 electricity consumers in Ubalenagar, Chokhidani area, BAIF road, BAIF company area, Priyankanagari, Renuka Park, Khandvenagar, Anasuya Park, etc.

The construction of the AWHO 22 KV switching station has been completed, and the power supply to this substation will be through two new 22 KV underground transmission lines from Lonikand Extra High Voltage Substation. As much as 95 percent of the 16 km long power lines have been completed, and 18 thousand electricity consumers in Lohegaon Road, Jadhavasti, Gorevasti, Bahirtavasti, Suyognagar, Wagholi Gaothan, Bhavadi Road will benefit from smooth power supply.

Despite the efforts of MSEDCL to maintain a smooth power supply, the recent failure of three power lines in the Wagholi area on Sunday resulted in a power outage for 9,500 customers. The engineers and employees of MSEDCL worked throughout the night to restore the power supply, but the cement concreting road delayed the repair work of the Karola-2 channel. An alternative power supply facility to Saistyam channel was provided through a redundant 22 KV Karola-2 channel, but it was found to have gone under the cement concrete road near Purvarang Society. The repair work of Karola-2 channel was completed on Monday (27th) at around 8.30 pm after JCB and breakers dug the cement road. Earlier, power supply from Wagholi power line to Saistyam channel was restored in a phased manner at 8 am on Monday.
