Pune, 18th October 2022: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has given Rs 36 crore to construct a new bridge at Bhairoba Nullah near Ganga Satellite Housing Society. The new bridge will be 15 metres long and will replace the demolished 100-year-old low-lying bridge.

According to Ganesh Puram, Engineer, PMC drainage department, permission has been sought from the police department, and the design and height of the bridge have been determined because the waterbody is prone to rise floodwaters.

During flooding, water flows at a height of 2.50 feet above the current bridge, according to civic officials, and the new structure will be built taller than the current bridge.

The memories of commuters being washed away in the strong current of flood waters of Bhairoba nullah at Ganga Satellite in September 2019 came back to haunt citizens on Friday evening after the city experienced a brief period of intense rainfall, resulting in flooding throughout the city.

Vinod Mathurawala, former Pune Cantonment Board (PCB) member, said, “The present bridge comes under the jurisdiction of PCB and the maintenance part is looked after by PMC. The cantonment board has already given its NOC to PMC for the construction of the new bridge.”

Maithili Manakwad, a Wanowrie-based civic rights activist, said, “There is a need for an alternate route to divert traffic from the existing bridge which has to be constructed anew.”
