Pune, 6th December 2024: Pune city is grappling with garbage and unsanitary conditions on roads, open spaces, dividers, pedestrian paths, and other areas, creating a messy and unhygienic environment. Due to inadequate sanitation, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has planned a comprehensive city cleanup. Around 1,500 employees will be deployed at each ward office to assist with the cleanup efforts. This campaign will begin in Zone 1 from 9th to 14th December, starting at the Dhole Patil Road Ward Office on Monday (9th).

PMC Additional Commissioner Prithviraj BP held a meeting today to discuss the cleanliness drive for Pune City. The meeting was attended by Assistant Commissioners of 15 Ward Offices, along with representatives from the Health Department, Encroachment Department, Skysign and License Department, Solid Waste Management Department, Electrical Department, Garden Department, Road Department, Drainage Department, and other officials, as well as members of the Mohalla Committee of Pune Police.

Currently, garbage is scattered across Pune, dividers are unclean, and trees are overgrown. Dust has accumulated due to improper road sweeping, and encroachments have led to more people discarding garbage and spoilt food on the roads. Since daily cleaning is not adequately carried out and no action is taken against unruly citizens, the city has become increasingly unsanitary. To address this, the PMC administration has decided to undertake a deep cleaning initiative.

In this drive, all PMC departments and their employees will collaborate to clean one regional office within two days. With the support of additional manpower from each department, the cleaning will be more effective. Action will also be taken against encroachments and unauthorised flexes. The cleanliness drive will include:

Cleaning slums and adjacent roads and removing dirt from the roads

Removing posters, grass from dividers, and advertisements

Removing abandoned vehicles from the streets

Destroying mosquito breeding grounds

Filling potholes and removing debris

Repairing rain gutters and sewage chambers

Involving schools, colleges, and social organisations in the drive

Conducting a two-day cleanliness drive in each ward office
