Pune Municipal Corporation Sets Up 71 Flood Relief Shelters, Activates Disaster Management Cell

Pune, 17th June 2025: With the onset of the monsoon and the looming threat of flooding in low-lying areas, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has activated its Disaster Management Cell and established 71 shelter facilities across the city to ensure citizen safety. These shelters are equipped to provide temporary accommodation to residents affected by potential flooding due to rising river levels.
The list of shelter locations and emergency contact numbers is now available on the PMC’s official website. The civic body has also made 24×7 flood control rooms operational in all 15 ward offices, including the main municipal building, to ensure rapid response and coordination during any flood-related emergencies.
“In past years, flooding occurred only when over 35,000 cusecs of water were released from the Khadakwasla dam into the Mutha River. However, due to increasing encroachments and reduced river carrying capacity, even 20,000 to 25,000 cusecs of released water now poses a risk,” a senior PMC official said.
To manage such emergencies, dedicated teams have been deployed at the Disaster Management Cell. These teams are equipped with essential machinery and tools, including:
77 dewatering pumps (from ward offices and the Fire Department)
Jetting machines (1 per ward office)
Utility vehicles (1 per ward office)
JCBs (1 per ward office)
8 rubber boats (for flood-affected areas)
Recycler machines (available as needed)
The PMC has appealed to citizens to remain vigilant and report any incidents of waterlogging or flooding promptly to the control rooms.
