Pune, Nagpur, Mumbai Among Top Cities in Corruption Cases: NCRB 2023
Pune, 2nd October 2025: Maharashtra has recorded the highest number of corruption cases in the country in 2023, according to the latest report released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). The state registered 763 cases under anti-corruption laws, making it the most corruption-affected state in India last year.
Despite repeated assurances of transparent governance by both central and state governments, the NCRB findings suggest that corruption remains a serious challenge. Of the 1,139 corruption cases reported across India in 2023, nearly two-thirds originated from Maharashtra alone. Uttar Pradesh followed in second place with 216 cases, while Haryana, Assam, and Jammu and Kashmir also featured among the top states.
Pune city stood out as the urban hotspot for corruption, recording 28 cases—the highest among Indian cities. It was followed by Coimbatore and Chennai, while Nagpur and Mumbai also figured in the list.
The report further highlighted Maharashtra’s poor standing in other crime categories. The state was also at the forefront in copyright violations, with 335 cases reported in 2023. A total of 340 people filed complaints, placing Maharashtra ahead of all other states in this category.
In addition, Maharashtra ranked second in the country for crimes registered under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Uttar Pradesh led the category with 2,771 cases, while Maharashtra followed with 340 atrocity-related cases.
