Viman Nagar, 3rd February 2025: In a bid to mitigate traffic congestion at the Kharadi-Viman Nagar stretch, the Pune Traffic Police has introduced a new rotary system on Nagar Road. The move aims to streamline vehicle movement, particularly during peak hours when traffic bottlenecks at the Kothari Wheels junction caused significant delays.

Explaining the rationale behind the new arrangement, Qaneez Sukhrani, Convenor of the Association of Nagar Road Citizens Forum, stated, “During peak hours, vehicles turning into Viman Nagar from Kharadi would create a four-to-five-lane buildup, leaving just one or two lanes for straight-moving traffic on Nagar Road. This led to constant jams, causing frustration and inconvenience for commuters.”

Under the new system:
Vehicles coming from Pune will take a U-turn at Somnath Nagar.
Vehicles coming from Kharadi will take a U-turn at AGNI.

According to Sukhrani, the first day of implementation saw smooth traffic flow. However, based on observations, a few improvements have been suggested during the ongoing 15-day trial period. “We have recommended installing blinkers at both U-turns where barricades are placed to alert drivers. Additionally, clear signage should be put up instructing straight-moving vehicles to stay in their lane and not swerve into the right lane to avoid conflicts with vehicles that have already U-turned,” she added.

The trial phase will continue, with further refinements expected based on commuter feedback.
