Pune, 5th January 2024: Notorious gangster Sharad Mohol succumbed to injuries after being shot in Kothrud today. Preliminary information suggests that Mohol fell victim to an unknown assailant who shot him three times in the Sutardara area of Kothrud.
The attack left Mohol severely injured, prompting his immediate admission to a nearby Sahyadri hospital. However, he succumbed to his injuries during treatment.
The motive behind the attack on Mohol and the identity of the assailants remain undisclosed at this point. The body of Mohol has been taken to Sassoon Hospital for post-mortem, where his relatives and supporters have gathered in large numbers.
Mohol had 18 cases of murder, attempt to murder and extortion registered against him. However, he came to the limelight when he was accused of killing suspected Indian Mujahideen member Qateel Siddiqui inside a high-security cell of the Yerwada Central Jail in June 2012. However, a district court had acquitted Mohol and his accomplice Alok Bhalerao in Siddiqui’s case in 2019.
In December 2012, Mohol was also elected to the Mutha gram panchayat in Mulshi taluka, while he was still lodged in the jail. Mutha village is no stranger to violent gang wars and gangster-politicians. In fact, it is said that Sharad modeled himself on Sandeep Mohol, who was looking to enter politics when he was killed by a rival gang in 2006 on Paud Road.
Sharad Mohol’s wife Swati Mohol had joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in April 2023.
In a statement Pune police said, “Today at around 1.20 pm, Sharad Hiraman Mohol was shot by his accomplice Sahil, also known as Munna Santosh Polekar along with other associates. Mohol was admitted to Sahyadri Hospital in Kothrud and later taken to Sassoon Hospital, where he was declared brought dead. The search for the accused involved in the crime is currently underway, and further investigation is in progress.”
