Pune: ‘On The Spot’ Measures To Solve Traffic Problems Suggested By PMC Commissioner And Police Commissioner After Joint Inspection Of Roads
Pune, 4th November 2022: Pune Municipal Commissioner Vikram Kumar and Police Commissioner Amitabh Gupta today inspected various roads in the city along with the senior officers of both departments and made some suggestions ‘on the spot’ to review the traffic jams occurring at the work sites of the various infrastructure projects.
Not only this, both the commissioners also ordered punitive action against the concerned contractors and companies who block the roads by barricading any roads unless the work is in progress.
Meanwhile, as the Municipal Commissioner and the Police Commissioner will be touring jointly, teams of the traffic branch and police stations and the municipal anti-encroachment department were seen on most of the congested roads in the city.
Since the beginning of the monsoon, traffic congestion has been seen on most of the roads in the city. Due to the 24-hour water supply scheme and digging of the roads for other services, the roads were potholed, adding to the traffic jam. In this way, 60 lakh Pune residents faced massive traffic jams during Ganeshotsav, Navratri and Diwali following the criticism from all levels, the competition between the police and municipal corporation administration started to push the responsibility on each other.
As soon as the rain stopped, the municipal administration took up the task of plugging the potholes. Also, the tender process for the renovation of potholed roads was implemented. Also, 815 traffic wardens were made available through various organizations. Police Commissioner Amitabh Gupta has made the staff of the traffic branch as well as the local police station responsible for traffic management.
Later today, Gupta along with Municipal Commissioner Vikram Kumar visited the places where major projects are going on in the city and understood the problems. Accordingly, instructions were also given to the officials present regarding the measures.
Police Commissioner Amitabh Gupta inspected the roads in Kharadi and Jail Road areas in the morning. After this, Vikram Kumar reviewed the work site of flyovers like the Government Polytechnic on Ganesh Khind Road, Pune University Chowk, Baner, Chandani Chowk, Navle Bridge and Sinhagad Road area. Before the piling work for the double-decker flyover on Ganesh Khind Road starts, it is suggested to take a U-turn from University Chowk to Jawahar Chowk and open the road leading to Senapati Bapat Road.
To implement this suggestion immediately, the Tata company removed the container for the metro workers and opened the road. After piling work started here, this road was ordered to be closed.
On Baner Road, Metro has completed the pillar construction work. But there is still time for further work. It was then suggested to remove the barricades and increase the carrying capacity of the road. Also, if barricades have been installed even after the work has stopped for more than two months, the local police have been ordered to take action against the concerned contractors.
The officials of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) were ordered to complete the work at Chandni Chowk by the end of June 2023. Both commissioners also inspected the preliminary work done to prevent accidents on the accident-prone Navale bridge.
On this occasion, PMC Chief Project Engineer Srinivas Bonala, Head of Road Department VG Kulkarni, Head of Encroachment Department Madhav Jagtap, DCP Bhagyashree Navtake, Traffic Branch in-charge, and DCP Rahul Shriram were also present.
