Bibwewadi, 28th December 2023: In a heart-wrenching incident on Saturday, an eleven-year-old boy, Asif Tabrez Shaikh, lost his life in Bibwewadi Upper locality after coming in contact with a 132 KV power line while flying a kite. Two other children sustained serious injuries and are currently undergoing treatment.

The incident has raised concerns about the safety of high voltage lines passing through densely populated areas, under the jurisdiction of Maharashtra State Electricity Transmission Company (Mahatransco).

Responding to the tragedy, a delegation of NCP office bearers, along with concerned local citizens, visited Rasta Peth office to meet with Mahatransco Chief Engineer Anil Kolap. The delegation presented the following demands:

1. Immediate compensation of ten to fifteen lakh rupees for the deceased Asif Tabrez Shaikh and the other injured children.
2. Investigation into the incident to determine responsibility, with appropriate action against those found responsible.
3. Immediate implementation of measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

NCP’s Amol Pardeshi said, “In response to these demands, Chief Engineer Kolap agreed to provide partial compensation through a cheque immediately. He also assured a thorough third-party investigation and pledged to take action against the relevant parties. Furthermore, Kolap committed to initiating work at the identified locations within the next two to three months to address the issue permanently.”

The death of Tabrez highlights the dangers posed by high voltage lines in urbanized areas. The NCP Urban Cell has pledged to advocate for justice on behalf of the victim’s family.

Officials from Mahatrasnco did not provide responses to inquiries from Punekar News.
