Lohegaon, 29th July 2022: An open ground has been transformed into an ‘open bar’ in Porwal Road area of Lohegaon, Pune. People purchase alcoholic beverages from a neighbouring liquor store and consume them in public. The open area is exactly opposite a housing society named Goodwill 24, Sathe Wasti Road, off Porwal road.
Residents in the neighbourhood, particularly women, are at risk because of this. These activities cause several issues for the nearby residents.
Arguments amongst drinkers are just one aspect of the problem. Following a disagreement, stones were thrown, breaking a glass pane in a house. Residents alleged that despite numerous complaints, the police continue to ignore the problem.
Members of the Lohegaon Residents Welfare Association (LRWA) alleged that even after repeated calls to the police control room no action is being taken. “Almost every night there is fight outside the wine shop and among the drunkards”, they said.
Recently a citizen took to Twitter to complain about this matter.
He wrote, “Please take action @CPPuneCity. Sir, this area is becoming dangerous due to drinkers.”
Another user wrote, “This area is becoming unsafe for women and children. When we tried to talk, those people started using abusive language.”
Another citizen said, “It is disgusting to see how people sit opposite to the wine shop… Action should be taken against the wine shop first.”
Soon the Pune police took notice of this issue and assured the citizens that action will be taken soon.
Pune City Police tweeted, “Noted, Necessary action will be taken.”
When contacted, Senior Police Inspector Bharat Jadhav, in-charge of the Vimantal police station, assured of action against the miscreants.
