Pune: Over 30% Beds At PMC Hospital Are Non-Operational Due To Shortage Of Staff And Facilities

Pune 26th August 2023: A shocking details have come to light related to government hospitals in the city. According to officials, over 30% beds in PMC run hospitals are non-operational due to shortage of staff and facilities. According to officials, the issue is causing problems to the Sassoon General Hospital as majority of the patients willing get treatment at the government hospitals are shifted there.

According to official record, there are around 1,400 beds in different hospitals of the Pune Municipal Corporation. Of this around, 1,000 beds are operational while 400 of them are non-operational due to shortage of staff and facilities. The officials however claimed that only Kamla Nehru Hospital which has a capacity of 275 beds is a hospital for genaral patients while other hospitals are reserved. This includes Naidu Hospital that is dedicated for the infectious disease patients.

As a result, Sassoon General Hospital is flooded with a large number of patients from all categories and the doctors there are forced to treat treat all types of patients including those referred by the PMC hospitals. According to officials at the Sassoon General Hospital, the hospital is expected to treat serious and severe patients but they are currently accepting all types of patients including those come for cold and flu related problems.

The Pune Municipal Corporation officials have said that around 35% of the posts in the health department of civic body are vacant and the attempts are being made to fulfil them on priority.
