Pune: Pavana Dam Full, Yet PCMC Societies Rely on Tankers For Water
Pimpri Chinchwad, 18th September 2026: With Pavana dam at full capacity, several housing societies in Pimpri Chinchwad are still relying on private tankers to meet their daily water needs, raising questions over the adequacy of civic supply.
The shortage is particularly acute in Wakad and Thergaon, where the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) supplies water on alternate days.
At Yashone Central Housing Society in Wakad, residents of 412 flats are hiring nearly 12 private tankers a day. Society members said the shortage, usually a summer problem, has continued through the monsoon after PCMC imposed a 15% cut amid delayed rains.
At Kalpataru Harmony Society, comprising 479 flats, residents are spending nearly Rs50,000 a month to draw water from a nearby well.
In Thergaon, the 680-flat Eden Garden Housing Society is receiving only about half its daily requirement, according to federation chairperson Prashant Kharangate.
The Pimpri Chinchwad Cooperative Housing Societies Federation said they have prepared a letter addressing civic chief demanding action on this.
The city requires around 720 MLD of water daily for its estimated 30-35 lakh population. Its sources include 520 MLD from Pavana dam, 80 MLD from Andra dam and 20 MLD from MIDC, leaving an estimated 100 MLD gap.
A senior PCMC water supply official said there was no citywide water cut and that the problem appeared to be limited to certain areas. The 15% reduction was introduced when the monsoon was delayed and dam levels were low, the official said.
“Societies facing supply issues should approach us. We will address complaints individually,” the official said, adding that PCMC would soon meet affected housing societies to identify and resolve the problem.
