Pimpri, 11th September 2023: In a significant step toward reducing emissions and promoting sustainable transportation, the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has set an ambitious target of transitioning at least 50 percent of the city’s three-wheelers to electric vehicles (EVs).

To achieve this goal, the civic body is actively collaborating with rickshaw drivers to facilitate the shift from CNG-powered auto-rickshaws to electric ones. Municipal Commissioner Shekhar Singh announced that the PCMC will provide substantial support to autorickshaw-owners to make this transition both easy and economical.

One of the key initiatives to address the challenges in adopting electric auto-rickshaws was spearheaded by the Pimpri-Chinchwad EV Cell, which recently convened a crucial meeting. The meeting saw the participation of high-ranking officials, including Additional Commissioner Vijaykumar Khorate, Ulhas Jagtap, Joint City Engineer Sanjay Kulkarni, and Deputy Regional Transport Officer Atul Ade, alongside representatives from the Rickshaw Association.

Municipal Commissioner Shekhar Singh outlined the corporation’s commitment to resolving issues and queries raised by rickshaw pullers. Workshops will be regularly organized by the Municipal Corporation to assist drivers in making a seamless transition to electric auto-rickshaws. As part of the initiative, drivers will receive financial assistance of up to 30 thousand rupees when they opt for e-rickshaws.

Furthermore, the Municipal Corporation aims to raise awareness among rickshaw associations about the technical, environmental, and economic advantages of switching to electric auto-rickshaws over CNG-powered ones. The discussions also covered the economic viability of electric auto-rickshaws and the development of future charging infrastructure to facilitate vehicle charging.

Prospective buyers interested in purchasing electric auto-rickshaws were provided with essential information about the financing options available through banks and financial institutions. This holistic approach aims to drive the widespread adoption of electric auto-rickshaws, contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable urban environment while empowering rickshaw pullers with the means to embrace eco-friendly transportation solutions.
