Pune: PCMC Launches ‘Green Society Initiative’ to Promote Eco-Friendly Living in Housing Societies

Pimpri Chinchwad, 15th June 2025: The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has introduced a new initiative to encourage housing societies across the city to embrace sustainable living practices. Titled the ‘Green Society Initiative,’ the programme is designed to evaluate residential complexes on key environmental parameters and reward them for eco-friendly efforts.
Under this initiative, societies will be assessed and given ‘green star’ ratings based on criteria such as proper waste segregation, on-site composting, solar energy use, rainwater harvesting systems, and wastewater recycling.
A senior PCMC official explained that the programme has a dual purpose: promoting environmental responsibility at the community level and building a comprehensive database of sustainability-conscious societies. “The information we collect will help us identify active societies and support them in scaling up their eco-practices. It’s a step toward decentralised, citizen-driven sustainability,” the official said.
Municipal Commissioner Shekhar Singh emphasized the role of residents in creating long-term environmental impact. “Every housing society has the ability to make a difference. Through this rating system, we want to acknowledge those setting an example and inspire others to follow suit,” he noted.
The project will be implemented in stages, beginning with awareness drives. These will be followed by society registrations, training sessions for residents and office-bearers, and on-ground evaluations to assess eligibility for the green stars.
Speaking about the civic body’s broader vision, Deputy Commissioner Sachin Pawar said, “We want to build a culture where sustainability isn’t just about compliance but becomes a collective way of life. This initiative aims to spark that movement from within communities.”
While the programme has been widely welcomed, environmental experts have pointed out that long-term success will depend on consistent monitoring and follow-up support. They have suggested incorporating a transparent evaluation framework and regular reviews to ensure societies maintain the standards they are rated on.
