Hinjawadi-Shivajinagar Pune Metro Project Gets New Completion Date
Hinjawadi, 15th June 2025: The completion deadline for Pune Metro Line 3, which will connect Hinjawadi to Shivajinagar over a 23-km stretch, has officially been extended to March 2026. The decision was approved by the executive committee led by the Additional Chief Secretary (Finance), according to officials from the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA).
Speaking on Saturday, PMRDA Commissioner Dr. Yogesh Mhase confirmed the development. “The committee has sanctioned the extension. The revised outer deadline for finishing the entire Metro Line 3 corridor is now March 2026,” he said.
In addition to the Metro project, authorities have also given more time to complete the integrated double-decker flyover spanning from University Chowk to E-Square junction. The new target for that infrastructure is the end of October this year.
Despite significant progress, PMRDA officials noted that certain critical works are still pending. “More than 85% of the Metro construction is already done. However, challenges such as delayed permissions for barricading on key VIP and high-traffic roads, and the slow pace of utility relocation, have hindered uninterrupted progress,” a senior official explained.
Originally set to launch in March 2025, the project has seen multiple delays—first to September, then December, and now the latest shift to March 2026. Trial runs, which were earlier scheduled for this September, are now likely to begin in early 2026, officials added.
The entire Metro line is planned to open in a single phase once construction is complete. However, the repeated postponements have drawn criticism from daily commuters and tech professionals in Hinjawadi, many of whom were expecting quicker access to mass transit.
“There’s growing disappointment among the public. Every few months, the deadline shifts. People are frustrated,” said a commuter advocacy group member who has been tracking the project’s progress.
Officials maintain that the new timeline is realistic and achievable, provided there are no further administrative or weather-related disruptions.
